This session is about using interactive techniques for the design and delivery of performance-improvement techniques (including training). Ultimately, my goal is to help you align training content, activity, and objectives with each other and with skills, knowledge, and attitudes (SKA).Later, to align the SKA to job performance and eventually to align everything to business results that include delighted customers.
Part 1. Interactive Lectures
It's not an oxymoron‑‑lectures can be interactive. In fact, the most effective lectures always are. This session will show you how to combine the control and efficiency of a lecture presentation with the interest and interaction of a game. Here are the advantages of using interactive lectures: It is active. An interactive lecture requires the participants to continuously process the information presented to them.It is two‑way. The participants and the instructor receive feedback from each other. Itis adjustable. The facilitator has complete control of the level and type of interaction among the participants. It is effective. The technical information is stored for easy recall by the learner even after long periods of time. The interactive lecture can be used with different topics including facts and figures, procedures, concepts, principles, and even interpersonal skills. The 40 different interactive lecture formats explored in this session have been used extensively by several trainers. This session will practice what it preaches. You will learn about interactive lectures through interactive lectures.
Part 2. Textra Games
A double-barreled problem: Most trainers waste time by repeating what is presented in handouts and manuals. Most trainees ignore pre-work and reading assignments. The suggested solution: Textra games combine the effectiveness of documents with the motivation of games and teamwork. This session provides a hands-on demonstration of a couple of textra games and exploration of a dozen others. At the end of the session, you will instantly create effective learning games that incorporate individual study and team activities. You will select the most appropriate textra game format for a specific type of learning and develop the game for immediate use.
Part 3. Designing and Using “Almost-Real” Objects and Events
Can you provide real-world learning opportunities -- without incurring the risks and costs associated with them? Yes, you can—by using simulations. Because simulation activities are very similar to on-the-job training, they ensure effective transfer and application of what you learn in the workshop to the work place. Simulation games provide immediate and realistic feedback. They reduce the risk to the players. Any inappropriate decision or action during the play results in negative consequences--but only in a make-believe environment. Simulation games also provide opportunities for repeated practice. You can discover important principles and procedures through trial-and-error experimentation.
Different types of effective simulation activities focus on selected aspects of reality. This session zooms you through the design and delivery of a variety of simulation games including action learning, the case method, simulations with playing cards, and interactive storytelling.
